Getting a Finance Report, No Credit Card RequiredBecause of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) of 2003, it has become easier and more convenient to get a copy of one’s credit report. Each individual is entitled to a copy of his or her finance report every 12 months – for free! Thus, you can get your finance report, no credit card required. It’s an easy and simple process, and there are even certain conditions under which you can get your free credit report more than once during a 12-month period. The largest credit reporting agencies – Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax – have set up a central web site where you can get your finance report, no credit card required. This site is at AnnualCreditReport.com, and the only information you need to enter to get your free credit report is your name, address, Social Security number, and birth date. Be warned, however, that there are more than one hundred other web sites whose names are similar to that of the Big Three’s central site. These sites mostly do not in any way provide credit reports; all they are interested in is to get your personal information, and if you give that to them, you are setting yourself wide open for identity theft. And if they ask for your credit card number (“for verification purposes”) you might become a victim of credit card fraud as well. You should also keep in mind that there are a number of states with laws that entitle citizens to access their credit reports for free more than once a year. Also, some circumstances you might find yourself in would allow you to request for a report without any charge even if you have already availed of your one free report for the year. These circumstances include: denial of credit applications, erroneous information in the report, and being a victim of fraud. But remember that you have to act in a timely manner when requesting a report under these circumstances. If you go beyond the allotted time frame, you might be required to pay for your report. The web sites of Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax offer more information on how to get free credit reports. Additional guidance is also available on the web site of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. It would be wise to visit these sites before you get your finance report, no credit card required, to insure that you follow the right process and avoid becoming a victim of fraud. |
